The Sun lights half of the Moon. As the Moon travels around Earth, we see different amounts of that sunlit half. That changing view makes the phases.

How the sky is calculated

Astronomy Engine 2.1.19, by Don Cross, calculates the Sun, Moon, and planets on your device. Rise and set times assume sea level and an unobstructed horizon. Actual conditions can differ. This is an astronomy planner, not a weather forecast.

Each evening runs from local noon to the following local noon. The selected time controls the Moon illustration and planet positions. No sunrise or darkness event is invented during polar day or night.

What works offline

Once the offline status says ready, calculations, saved notes, photos, and this Moon lesson work without a connection. Browser storage can be cleared or evicted, so keep backups of important notes.
